Gaza Emergency Shelter

An initiative from GIRIH to contribute in finding Solutions for Gaza displaced people crisis as a response after 7 October 2023.

This is a voluntary initiative overcome after investigations for the current situation that Gazians face, where most of people are living in tents and demolished buildings, which increase the already risks that threatening their lives.

A temporary shelter of rammed earth is proposed to overcome with a suitable solution regarding to material scarcity and current context in the Gaza trip

A temporary shelter made of rammed earth was proposed to overcome the material scarcity and the current context in the the Gaza Strip, where cement is not available. The internal dimensions of the shelter are 270 cm * 540 cm, the walls are 30 cm thick, the base is made of rammed rubble and the walls are made of clay and sand in equal proportions with a little water added. Using a wooden mold with an internal size of 30 * 60 cm and a height of 30 cm, the soil can be placed inside it in layers and compacted, i.e. pressed, using a pestle-like tool made of metal or wood available in the form of a cube with a base of 10 * 10 cm. The height of the walls is about 240 cm. Then, a covering can be made using several solutions, including using reinforcing steel from destroyed buildings after reshaping it into arches, then covering it with palm fronds (Jarida), then a layer of soil mixed with straw or plant waste, covering it with a layer of reinforced nylon or Plastic roller.
